Mônica Bergamo: Brazilian laboratories hold an emergency meeting to discuss the arrival of a new variant

by

Brazilian reference laboratories in respiratory viruses are going to hold an emergency meeting with the Ministry of Health this Friday (26) to discuss ways to identify the new variant of coronavirus that is already causing tension around the world.

The mobilization began to be organized this morning, in the face of alarming information released by the WHO (World Health Organization) about the new strain of the virus.

On Tuesday (23), scientists began to draw attention to a variant, B.1.1.529, identified in South Africa with a large number of mutations, some described as “terrible”, in the S protein (from spike, or spike), used by Sars-Cov-2 to enter human cells.

Fiocruz, Instituto Adolfo Lutz and Laboratório Evandro Chagas will participate in the meeting.
They carry out tests and sequencing to identify the coronavirus variants present in Brazil — currently, Delta is predominant.

At the meeting, the scientists will discuss ways of approach to try to quickly identify the possible presence of the new strain of coronavirus in Brazil.

The idea is to adopt a unique approach.

Laboratories can adopt the strategy, for example, of carrying out tests on passengers arriving in Brazil from countries where the variant is already present, or of taking random samples from the population.
The tension is high in bodies responsible for health policy in the country.

Anvisa (National Health Surveillance Agency) suggested this Friday (26) to limit the entry into Brazil of those who have been, in the last 14 days, in six African countries: South Africa, Botswana, Swaziland (Eswatini), Lesotho, Namibia and Zimbabwe.

The idea is to prevent the spread in Brazil of a new, potentially more transmissible variant of Covid-19, B.1.1.529.

The Ministries of the Civil House, Justice and Health will decide whether or not to accept Anvisa’s suggestions for sanitary border control. As Folha revealed, the government has ignored since the 12th the suggestion of the agency to adopt the “vaccine passport” for entry by land or on international flights in Brazil.
