Coronavirus – Spain: Will suspend flights from South Africa and Botswana due to the new variant

by

The Spanish government will suspend flights from South Africa and Botswana following concerns about a new highly contagious variant of Covid-19 in those countries, Health Minister Carolina Darias announced today, following similar decisions taken by other European countries.

“We will look for other countries but at the moment these are the two,” Darias told state-run TVE

Darias did not give details on when the restrictive measures will take effect, but the cabinet meeting, at which such measures are approved, is scheduled for next Tuesday.

“We will immediately adopt a decision … to ask passengers from high-risk countries to provide, in addition to the vaccination certificate, either an antigen test or a molecular test.”

The announcement comes after the European Commission recommended a travel ban across the European Union to southern Africa due to the rapid increase in B.1.1.529 variant in South Africa, which scientists fear could to avoid vaccine protection.
