Mônica Bergamo: Instituto Adolfo Lutz identifies first cases of Influenza A since May 2020

The Adolfo Lutz Institute, in São Paulo, identified for the first time, since May of last year, two cases of Influenza A in tests carried out in its laboratory. Alert signal is on.

One of the suspicions is that the greater relaxation of measures to prevent the new coronavirus by the population is beginning to be reflected in the circulation of other pathogens.

“Our biggest concern continues to be the coronavirus. But making the use of masks more flexible, for example, can facilitate the spread of other diseases”, says Adriano Abbud, director of rapid responses at the institute.

Adolfo Lutz regularly collects samples from hospitals in the state to sequence them for all types of respiratory viruses, as a health surveillance measure.

Thus, the emergence or return of new pathogens is quickly identified, guiding public policies to fight the disease.

The absence of flu cases since May had been positively surprising analysts. In 2019, 800 cases of Influenza had been observed by the institute.

BLOCK

The mask is considered to be primarily responsible for what Lutz members jokingly said was the “eradication” of the flu in the state. But now the cases are back. It remains to be seen with what force.
