The resignation of the leader of the ruling Social Democratic Party (SDSM) was submitted late Friday night by Prime Minister Zoran Zaef, opening the process of electing a new chairman of the party, who is likely to also succeed him as prime minister. .
The SDSM Central Committee, during its meeting that ended after midnight, accepted the resignation of Zoran Zaef and decided that the internal party elections for the election of a new leader will be held on December 12th.
Zoran Zaef, 47, has been in the leadership of SDSM since 2013.
Zaef is also expected to step down as Prime Minister of Northern Macedonia in the near future.
He has stated that the next leader of his party should be instructed to form a new government.
As it became known, he will continue the negotiations with the Albanian opposition party “Alternative” in the coming days in order for it to join the governing coalition. Joining the government of the small Albanian party is probably necessary in order for the current government, with a slightly different shape, to regain the parliamentary majority and complete its term, which typically lasts another two and a half years.
At this stage, following the recent departure of the Albanian BESA party from the ruling coalition, Zoran Zaef’s government no longer has a majority in Parliament: it is supported by 59 of the 120 members of parliament.
However, SDSM spokeswoman Bogtanka Kuzeska told a news conference after the party’s JC meeting that Zoran Zaef had assured the government that he had a parliamentary majority, relying on the current 61-member parliament. Ms. Kuzeska did not specify how, with the support of which MPs, the government has a parliamentary majority.
The Albanian Alternative party, which may switch to the government camp, has four deputies.
It is not ruled out that the government will also be supported by MP Kastriot Rexhepi, who was expelled from BESA after on November 11, literally at the last minute, he decided to abstain from the meeting of the Parliament where the motion of censure against the government tabled by opposition, thus giving the “kiss of life” to the Zaef government.
Last night, the presidency of the Alternative party also met, which authorized the leader of this party, Afrim Gassi, to continue the negotiations with Zoran Zaef and the leadership of SDSM for the possibility of joining the government.
“We have concluded that the country is in a deep political and energy crisis. The party authorized the president to continue talks with the current prime minister and the caretaker prime minister to determine their positions and views on overcoming the crisis. “The final decision on the participation of Alternative in the government will be taken by the Central Committee of the party”, summed up the representative of the Albanian party, Orhan Murtezani.
The current government, in addition to the SDSM and smaller parties, includes the largest Albanian party in northern Macedonia, Ali Ahmeti’s DUI.
The political developments in Northern Macedonia were triggered by the heavy defeat of the Social Democratic Party in the municipal elections in Northern Macedonia (October 31st). Zoran Zaef claimed responsibility for the attack, announcing his impending resignation as party leader and prime minister.
