The major mistakes we make with sunscreen and lead to burns

by

The vast majority of people constantly make mistakes about sunscreen as a result of not being protected from the sun’s ultraviolet rays.

The use sunscreen which is necessary now in summer but also in winter as underlined by dermatologists, is not as simple as we think. The vast majority of people constantly make mistakes about sunscreen as a result of not being protected from the sun’s ultraviolet rays and being caused by skin damage.

When we say damage we mean the immediate, a sunburn, and the medium-term, if the mistakes are repeated, to increase the chances of cancer. What mistakes can a person make regarding their sunscreen?

The mistakes they start from the selection on the shelf, they reach the way it spreads on the skin and of course it also concerns the appropriate times when each product is used. In order not to make the same mistakes and see your skin “burn” and age prematurely, follow the following tips to enjoy maximum protection.

How to choose sunscreen?

  • Choose a sunscreen that protects against UV-A and UV-B rays and has a protection index (SPF) of at least 15.
  • Carefully read the product label to choose the one that meets your needs. E.g. If you like to swim or sweat a lot, choose a sunscreen that is also waterproof. It will also be good not to get stuck and of course to have a different product for the body and different for the face.
  • Check the ingredients of the sunscreen if it has (PABA), ie para-aminobenzoic acid, in case you have sensitive skin and it may cause allergies.
  • If you use a sunscreen that causes you allergies, look carefully at its ingredients and choose another that does not contain the “suspects” that cause it. Not all sunscreens have the same ingredients.
  • Choose a water-based sunscreen in case you have oily skin prone to acne.
  • It is not always the most expensive sunscreen and the perfect one for your skin. Choose one based on your needs and the type of skin you have.
  • Do not neglect to check the expiration date of the sunscreen that you are preparing to buy since it may have been left on a shelf for a long time.

When to put sunscreen?

  • Apply sunscreen about 30 minutes before sun exposure, not after. So the product will have enough time to be absorbed by the skin and do the job for which it is intended. There will also be no risk of rinsing off the sunscreen with the first dip.
  • Remember to reapply sunscreen after a swim / swim or after about an hour and you have started to sweat a lot.
  • Apply sunscreen often if you are walking on the beach or you have to stay in the sun due to some work, exercise or just walking. At the same time it will be good to wear light colored clothes and a hat.

How to put sunscreen?

  • Shake it well before use to mix all the ingredients of the product that may have “sat” as long as it remains stationary on a shelf or bag for an hour or so.
  • Make sure you do not skimp on sunscreen. There is an informal rule that says you have to fill your handful with sunscreen to cover the whole body.
  • Apply sunscreen to any part of the body that is exposed to the sun. Do not neglect the ears, nose, back, shoulders and back of the legs.
  • Do not rush, make sure you are meticulous when applying sunscreen to make sure it really went everywhere and in the right amount.
  • Be careful when applying sunscreen to the area around the eyes, so that no product enters the eyes and causes vision problems and some infection.

Extra tip: Children are a special category both regarding the products with which we protect them from the sun since there are specialized series for their most sensitive skin. At the same time, adults should always be vigilant and be even more meticulous with the way sunscreen is applied to children. Under no circumstances should children be allowed to use the product alone. Aside from the fact that they will probably put it wrong, it is likely to get into their eyes or mouth.
