The World Health Organization today called for “urgent action” against it smallpox of monkeys in Europeagainst the tripling of cases that has been observed for two weeks in the old continent.
In a statement, the WHO regional director called on European countries to “step up their efforts in the coming weeks and months to prevent monkey pox from spreading to a larger geographical area”.
“Urgent and coordinated action is imperative if we are to change direction in the fight against disease transmission,” said WHO Europe Director Hans Kluge.
According to the health agency, Europe now has more than 4,500 confirmed cases in the laboratory, which is three times more than in mid-June.
This figure represents 90% of the cases recorded worldwide since mid-May, when the disease, which until then was endemic in only ten African countries, began to spread to Europe.
Europe is already at the heart of this new communicable disease 31 countries or soils that have reported cases of monkey pox.
UN experts on Saturday saw the sharp rise in cases as a health threat, the development of which is very worrying, but has not yet reached the stage of global health need.
Despite this decision, “the rapid development and urgency of this event means that the committee (of experts) will reconsider its position shortly,” the WHO said in a statement.
