The Pérola Byington hospital will reopen at a new address in the central region of São Paulo in the first week of August, according to the São Paulo government. Initially, there will only be outpatient care. And the forecast is that in up to three months it will be working at full capacity.

Today, the hospital operates in a building on Avenida Brigadeiro Luís Antônio, in Bela Vista, which is rented and will be returned to the owner after the transfer of care is completed.

The land on which the new one was built belongs to the City of São Paulo and is located at Avenida Rio Branco, 1162, in Campos Elíseos. The work, which is in the final stretch, should be delivered on the 17th of this month.

When fully operational, the hospital, which is the largest health center specializing in women’s care in Latin America, will have 172 beds, 92 of which are surgical, 60 clinical, ten in the ICU, ten in day hospitals – beds in which hospitalization have a duration of less than 24 hours.

The hospital also assists transgender men in cases of pregnancies caused by rape. Transgender women can also be cared for, but demand is lower, according to the State Department of Health.

In a press conference during an inspection of the works this Wednesday (6), the governor of São Paulo, Rodrigo Garcia (PSDB), said that the Pérola Byington will increase its service capacity by about 50% next year, when the transfer of services between the old and new unit is complete.

The construction of the new building and modernization of the equipment cost around R$ 245 million.

Currently, the hospital has a volume of 12,800 admissions per year, 107,000 outpatient visits, 21,000 chemotherapy sessions, 23,000 hormone therapy sessions and about 20,000 radiotherapy treatments.

The Secretary of Health of the state, Jean Gorinchteyn, told the report during the inspection of the works that among the services offered as priorities are genecological specialties, highly complex surgeries, mainly oncological (cancer) and human reproduction.

Insecurity and Cracolândia

The mayor of São Paulo, Ricardo Nunes (MDB), also participated in the visit to the new hospital. At the same time that politicians were introduced to the new equipment, about 500 meters away, in Santa Ifigênia, vendors and regulars of the cracolândia stream exchanged punches and kicks, and used stones and pieces of wood to attack each other.

Governor and mayor were asked how they intend to respond to the feeling of insecurity in the surroundings of the new hospital, which is between the current and old address of cracolândia.

Nunes said he had held a competition to hire 1,000 new metropolitan civil guards and increased the guards’ starting salary by 72%.

“Rodrigo and I are determined to face this [tráfico de drogas na cracolândia] every day continuously”, said the mayor.

Despite being quoted, the governor did not respond.
