The weekly report will include, among other things, more but, above all, more qualitative and reliable data
Latest information about epidemiological report for the corona virus which is from today Friday will be published on a weekly basismade it known with his announcement o EODY.
As he explains, this happens in most European countries and this weekly report will include, among other things, “more but, above all, more qualitative and reliable data”, as stated in the announcement.
The data concerning the changes in epidemic burden in the community, and which will also be based on the urban wastewater estimates, to estimate the load in each area.
In addition, they will continue to be announced total as well as weekly average of cases arising from them diagnostic checks in the territoryall hospitalizations, but also ICU hospitalizations, as well as deaths, with data that will also concern age distributions
The announcement in detail
According to the latest data from the European Center for Disease Control (ECDC), regarding the COVID-19 pandemic, there is an increasing trend in the number of registered cases in almost all countries of the European Union. The number of cases, as is easily understood, is a direct function of the diagnostic control policy of each country.
Greece is the third country in the European Union in terms of the daily number of diagnostic tests performed against COVID-19, with their number reaching 6,672 per 100 thousand population.
The course of the pandemic in our country has been showing an upward trend for about 4 weeks. Nevertheless, the corresponding change in serious hospitalizations (ICU hospitalizations) is very small. Based on existing Greek and international data, during the release of the Omicron variant of the coronavirus, the footprint of outbreaks in serious hospitalizations and deaths was much smaller compared to all previous variants.
Similar data regarding the course of the pandemic are also published in the recent ECDC epidemiological report indicating that at the current stage of the pandemic special emphasis should be placed on indicators related to hospitalizations in simple beds, but also ICU beds, intubations, deaths as well as quality data on rates of variants circulating in the community through the Genomic Surveillance Network.
Because the daily number of cases directly depends on the geochronological distribution of the diagnostic tests carried out, as well as the sanitary requirements of the period, the epidemiological report of the EODY will, from now on, be published on a weekly basis.
This also happens in most European countries, such as, for example, France, Italy, Spain, the United Kingdom, and Sweden, Ms. The report will continue to announce the total as well as the weekly average of the cases resulting from the diagnostic tests in the territory, the total of hospitalizations, but also hospitalizations in ICUs, as well as deaths, with data that will also concern the age allocations.
Also, the data related to the changes in the epidemic load in the community will be announced, and which will be based on the estimations in the urban waste water, to estimate the load in each area.
The weekly epidemiological report will provide more but, above all, more qualitative and reliable data regarding changes in the burden of disease in the community, without the bias of the number of tests carried out per area and per day.
The current phase of the pandemic indicates that we are in a transitional state where the number of hospitalizations and deaths is more important than the cases which, due to the sampling bias, do not provide a reliable and comparable picture between different geographical areas within the country but and between different countries.
It is worth noting that the recommendations of international organizations state that in the near future the epidemiological reports of COVID-19 will be similar to those of the flu, where the frequency of the disease is reported in a representative sample of the population with symptoms of respiratory diseases.
Finally, at the ECDC level, it has been decided to stop sending data on the total number of laboratory-confirmed cases on a weekly basis, as it is now considered that this indicator no longer contributes to capturing the epidemiological situation of the countries for the reasons mentioned above.
