ELSTAT: Inflation jumps to 12.1% for June

Upward for another month moved o inflation in Greece in June an upward trend which he records for 13th consecutive monthfrom June 2021.

According to her data Greek Statistical Authority (ELSTAT), national inflation last month rose on an annual basis to 12.1%, from 11.3% in May. On a monthly basis and compared to last May, the rate of increase was 1.6%.

It is recalled that based on Eurostat data, consumer prices in June on an annual basis climbed to 12%, when last month they ran at a revised downward rate of around 10.5% (10.7% the initial estimate).

Broad-scale was also a rise on a monthly basis, since the said index accelerated by 2.5%a change that was the second largest at Eurozone level, behind Estonia’s 2.8%.

It is the first time after a long time, where the national inflation is so close to the harmonized one in the Eurozone, as usually the deviation is around 1% (the national one is higher than the harmonized one).

For the 12 months, from July 2021 to June 2022, consumer prices appear increased by 6.3%, when for the corresponding period July 2020 – June 2021 a negative rate of 1.3% was recorded.

Specifically, the increase in the Index, according to ELSTAT, comes from increases in the following categories:

• 12.6% in the group Food and non-alcoholic beverages, due to price increases mainly in: bread and cereals, meats (general), fish (general), dairy and eggs, oils and fats, fresh fruit, vegetables (general), sugar-chocolates-sweets-ice creams, other foods, coffee-cocoa-tea, mineral water-soft drinks-fruit juices.

• 0.9% in the group Alcoholic beverages and tobacco, due mainly to an increase in prices of alcoholic beverages (not served).

• 4.6% in the Clothing and footwear group, due to price increases in clothing and footwear.

• 31.5% in the Housing group, mainly due to price increases in: house rents, home repair and maintenance items, electricity, natural gas, heating oil, solid fuels.

• 6.5% in the group Durable goods-Household goods and services, due to price increases mainly in: furniture and decorative goods, household appliances and repairs, glassware-tableware and household utensils, household goods for direct consumption, household services.

• 0.6% in the Health group, mainly due to price increases in: medical products, medical, dental and paramedical services, hospitals and clinics. Part of this increase was offset by the decrease in prices mainly in pharmaceutical products.

• 25.0% in the Transportation group, due mainly to price increases in: new cars, used cars, car parts and accessories, fuel and lubricants, maintenance and repair of personal transport equipment, taxi passenger transport, air passenger tickets, tickets passenger transport by ship.

• 1.7% in the Leisure-Cultural activities group, mainly due to price increases in: leisure and cultural durables, small leisure items-flowers-pets, cinemas-theatres, stationery and design materials, package holidays. Part of this increase was offset by the decrease in prices mainly in: audio-visual equipment-computers-repairs, books.

• 0.9% in the Education group, due mainly to an increase in the prices of secondary education fees.

• 6.5% in the Hotels-Cafes-Restaurants group, mainly due to an increase in prices in: restaurants-patisseries-cafes, hotels-motels-inns.

• 2.3% in the ‘Other goods and services’ group, mainly due to an increase in prices for other types of personal care.

The only sector to record a decline in prices is that of telecommunications with a 2.3% drop.
