The research is partly funded by the UK Foreign Office and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Ten European countries will participate in one international study with the aim of better understanding the scientists monkey pox and assess its effects, the French AIDS and viral hepatitis research agency (ANRS) announced today.

This study “will allow us to acquire new, necessary knowledge on research progress and available treatments” said Professor Yazdan Yazdanpana, the director of ANRS-Emerging Infectious Diseases, in a statement.

The study, called “Mosaic”, will build on research already underway in the Central African Republic. Patients from ten European countries (Britain, Switzerland, Belgium, France, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal and Spain) will provide information to specialists about the symptoms they experienced and how they responded to treatments. They will also be monitored by doctors to record their recovery time or the occurrence of possible complications.

“There is an urgent need to better understand this neglected disease”said Professor Xavier Leschire, who is coordinating the research in Europe. “I am delighted that within a few weeks an investigation has been launched in Europe”Professor Pierio Oliaro, of the University of Oxford, commented for his part.

The research is partly funded by the UK Foreign Office and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Last week the World Health Organization expressed concern about the outbreak of monkeypox and convened the Emergency Committee, which will judge the seriousness of this crisis, within the next week at the latest.
