Sarigiannis: Over 300,000 active cases

The peak has already occurred in some tourist areas, the professor said

In 315,000 they amount to approx active cases of coronavirus in our country, as he estimated while speaking on SKAI and on the show “Today”, the Professor of Environmental Engineering, Demosthenes Sarigiannis.

Dispersion in the community, as the professor said, will reach peaking towards the end this weeks. However, the peak has already been noted in tourist areas such as Mykonos, Paros, Santorini but also in three of the four regions, with the exception of Heraklion where the increase continues.

“We have created local immunity in the islands that led this wave,” said the professor.

On the other hand, Mr. Sarigiannis emphasized that in areas such as Pieria, Zakynthos, Halkidiki, Corfu, Rhodes and Thassos there is a strong upward trend which will not be de-escalated in the next ten days and it would be good, he noted, to increase the number of tests.

The situation will be better in August especially, from 12 o’clock onwards as the professor mentioned, but it will depend on how we manage the tourist flows from countries such as Spain, France, Italy, Germany where the pandemic is in full swing.

Finally, Mr. Sarigiannis explained why it is still important not to get infected with the virus even though the feeling of “fatigue” regarding the pandemic has started to prevail: “There is really the feeling of fatigue and the feeling of “getting stuck and finishing” . Unfortunately we don’t end up getting infected, there is immune escape and with Omicron you can get infected again. The virus is a systemic inflammation of the body that hits our sensitive spots. It’s really, really important not to get stuck.”
