The Butantan Institute will import doses of Coronavac from China for the immunization of children aged 3 to 5 years against Covid-19. The statement was made to Sheet on Wednesday night (13) by the Secretary of State for Health of São Paulo, infectologist Jean Gorinchteyn.

The emergency use of Coronavac for children aged 3 to 5 years was unanimously approved this Wednesday (13) and without restrictions by Anvisa (National Health Surveillance Agency).

According to Gorinchteyn, the supply of Coronavac is very small and should be used for those who have taken the first dose of this vaccine and have not yet shown up to receive the second injection of the immunizer against Covid.

From the order of vaccines by the Ministry of Health to the institute, says the secretary, the estimate is that the immunizers take 45 days to arrive in Brazil. “Here in São Paulo we need two days to start vaccinating across the state,” he said.

The Ministry of Health did not say whether there is an estimate scheduled for the start of vaccination of children aged 3 to 5 years against the new coronavirus, but said, in a note, that it will evaluate, together with the Technical Advisory Board on Immunizations, the use of the immunizer in this period. age group.

Gorinchteyn said that in São Paulo there are 1.1 million children in the age group allowed to be vaccinated with Coronavac. “So in the state we will need approximately 2.2 million doses.”

In the capital of São Paulo, the city hall said that there are 313,826 children of the new age group able to be vaccinated.

According to Butantan, the approved vaccine schedule follows the same protocol that is applied to children over 6 years of age and adults, with the same dosage and an interval of 28 days between applications.

“Butantan now hopes that the immunizer will be incorporated into the National Immunization Program [PNI] of the Ministry of Health, according to the necessary demand and through contracting”, said the institute.

The institute recalled that in Chile, a peer-reviewed survey published in the journal Nature, carried out with 500,000 children, showed that the immunizing agent provided 69% protection against hospitalization in ICUs (Intensive Care Units) and 64.6% against hospitalization. by Covid-19.

Chile has been applying Coronavac to children aged 3 to 5 years since December 2021. Other countries that use this vaccine in this age group are China, Colombia, Thailand, Cambodia, Ecuador and the autonomous territory of Hong Kong.

Until June 11 of this year, there were at least 291 more deaths under the age of five in the country, an average of 1.8 per day.

Coronavac’s approval for children from three years old came after the third request made by Butantan.

Currently, children ages 5 to 11 can be vaccinated with Pfizer’s immunizer.

According to a bulletin released by the Municipal Health Department, 95.3% of children in this age group had their first dose in the city of São Paulo — 1,083,159 of vaccines applied. In addition, 72.4% received the second —1,013,020 people aged 5 to 11 years.

The state government website with information about vaccination in São Paulo municipalities was offline this evening.

Children have not yet started receiving reinforcement in immunization against Covid-19. Adolescents from 12 to 17 years old, however, can already receive the third dose, with vaccines from Pfizer.

In the city of São Paulo and in some municipalities in the metropolitan region, the second booster dose, or fourth vaccine, is being administered to those over 35 years of age. The brand of immunizer applied is the one you have at the health post.
