Coronavirus: Which vaccinated people are at risk of becoming seriously ill? Pfizer study answers

by

Covid-19 infections in vaccinated people – so-called breakthroughs – are three times more common in those who are immunosuppressed and generally have a weakened immune system, according to a new major US study led by Pfizer scientists. The study highlights the need for a third dose booster in these individuals.

The researchers, led by Pfizer’s Manuela Di Fusco and published in the Journal of Medical Economics, analyzed data on nearly 1.28 million people over the age of 16 who had been vaccinated with Pfizer. BioNTech between December 2020-July 2021.

About 18% of them were identified as people with suppressed or weakened immune systems (people with advanced HIV / AIDS, cancer, kidney disease, rheumatic or other inflammatory and autoimmune diseases, those who had an organ or bone marrow transplant, etc.) . These people accounted for 38% of vaccinated infections, 60% of those hospitalized after vaccination, and 100% of vaccinated deaths.

The proportion of Covid-19 infections in vaccinated people was three times higher in people with a suppressed / weakened immune system (0.18%) than in people without such a problem (0.06%).

In total, after at least two weeks after the second dose, there were only 978 infections in fully vaccinated (0.08%). 124 of these breakthrough infections (13%) required hospitalization. Of these, 74 (60%) involved people with weak immune systems and eventually two patients died.
