Koronovirus-Sewage: 80% above Patras – Stable viral load in Attica (table)

by

The results of the laboratory tests of the National Network of Sewage Epidemiology for the epidemiological surveillance of the SARS-CoV-2 virus in urban wastewater, which operates under the coordination of EODY, are announced. The samples come from the Attica Region and the cities of Thessaloniki, Larissa, Volos, Heraklion, Chania, Rethymnon, Agios Nikolaos Lassithi, Patras, Xanthi, Alexandroupolis, Ioannina and Corfu. The samples are taken from the entrances of the local Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWUs) and correspond to the population served by them.

Conclusions: During the week 22 to 28 November 2021, there were increasing trends, compared to the week 15 to 21 November 2021, in the average weekly viral load of SARS-CoV-2 in the urban wastewater of four of the thirteen areas (04/13) tested from the National Network of Sewage Epidemiology (EDEL) of EODY, stabilizing trends were observed in three of the thirteen (03/13) areas of EDEL and a decrease in viral load was observed in six (06/13) areas of EDEL. A net increase in the average weekly viral load of urban wastewater was observed in Ioannina (+ 40%), Agios Nikolaos (+ 65%) and Patras (+ 80%), while a marginal increase was observed in Thessaloniki (+ 19%). The viral load of urban wastewater remained virtually stable in Larissa (-7%), in the Attica Region (+ 4%) and in Alexandroupolis (+ 10%). A decrease in the average weekly viral load of urban wastewater was observed in Volos (-31%), Chania (-38%), Rethymno (-35%) and Corfu (-59%), while the decrease was observed in Xanthi (-11%) and in Heraklion (-20%).

Region of Attica: In the last week, 22-28 / 11/21, the average weekly viral load in the urban wastewater of the Attica Region showed a stabilizing trend, with a statistically insignificant change (+ 4%) of the weekly average compared to the previous week, 15- 21/11/21. The upward trend in the viral load of wastewater in the Attica Region started in mid-September 2021 and since then the viral load has gradually increased. The largest increase was observed in the last two weeks of October and the first week of November, while then and until today the viral load of urban wastewater shows a stabilizing trend. The viral load remains high.
