WHO Monkey Pox: A Global Emergency

Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus clarified that the risk to the world is relatively low, except for Europe, where it is elevated.

THE World Health Organisation declared the highest level of alert to deal with it monkey poxwhich has affected 17,000 people in 74 countries in the world, announced the Director General of the Organization.

“I have decided to declare a public health emergency on a global scale”said Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus during a press conference, clarifying that the risk to the world is relatively low, outside of Europe, where it is increased.

The director-general of the WHO explained that the expert committee could not agree and remained divided on the necessity of declaring the highest level of alert, and for this reason Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus made the decision.

“It’s a call to action, but it’s not the first”said Mike Ryan, WHO emergency manager, adding that he hopes this will lead to collective action against the disease.

Kyriakidou: EU ready to boost response to monkeypox

The EU is ready to step up its response to monkeypox, Health and Food Safety Commissioner Stella Kyriakidou said after the World Health Organization declared a global public health emergency.

“We have been actively monitoring the situation since day one and monkeypox vaccines are already being delivered to our member states. We stand ready to strengthen our response in the EU” pointed out Ms. Kyriakidou with her post on Twitter.
