Anvisa (National Health Surveillance Agency) announced this Tuesday afternoon (30) that the omicron variant was identified in Brazil.
The regulatory agency said that samples from two Brazilians who preliminarily tested positive for the new strain of Sars-CoV-2 will be sent for confirmatory laboratory analysis. The results were communicated by the Albert Einstein laboratory, linked to the homonymous hospital.
The exams are from a man who was in South Africa —the country where the micron was identified for the first time— in recent days and his wife.
The passenger disembarked in Guarulhos on November 23, coming from South Africa, with a negative RT-PCR test. To prepare for the trip back to South Africa, however, he sought out the laboratory located at Guarulhos airport on November 25, in the company of his wife.
In tests that day, both tested positive for Covid-19. Thus, the fact was communicated to the Cievs-SP (Strategic Information Center on Health Surveillance of SĂ£o Paulo.
In view of the positive results, due to the travel history, the Albert Einstein laboratory took the initiative to carry out the genetic sequencing of the samples.
The laboratory then notified Anvisa on Monday (29) about the positive results of the tests and the start of procedures for genetic sequencing, and, on Tuesday, reported that, in previous analyses, the omicron variant was found.
