EODY report on hepatitis: 2 new cases in children in Greece

The first case involves a two (2) year old child with fever and gastrointestinal symptoms and the other case a thirteen (13) year old child with fever and rash.

According to World Health Organizationto date, have been recorded 1010 cases of acute hepatitis of unknown etiology in children, in 35 countries of the world. In Europe have been recorded 484 incidents, of which 272 in the United Kingdom. In recent weeks there has been a steady decrease in incidents internationally.

In our country, in the last twenty days, 2 new cases of children have been identified, which meet the criteria of a “probable case” of acute hepatitis of unknown etiology, according to the definition of the World Health Organization.

The first case involves a two (2) year old child with fever and gastrointestinal symptoms and the other case a thirteen (13) year old child with fever and rash. Laboratory testing revealed increased transaminases >500 IU/ml, without documenting an infection or other cause justifying this increase. The children were treated, improved and were released from the hospital in excellent condition. To date, 14 cases have been recorded in our country, which meet the criteria of a “probable case” of acute hepatitis of unknown etiology in children.
