Bolsonaro again defends ineffective medicine and is applauded by doctors

President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) once again defended, this Wednesday (27), the use of ineffective drugs against Covid-19 and was applauded by an audience of doctors.

In a speech at the Federal Council of Medicine two days after the PGR (Attorney General’s Office) asked for the shelving of the investigation opened at the request of the Covid CPI due to the president’s propaganda in favor of hydroxychloroquine, the Chief Executive said that “there was a very strong experience of interference in medical autonomy” in the pandemic.

The representative said that he took the drugs that made up the so-called early treatment against the coronavirus, whose effectiveness has not been corroborated by scientific research, and that he believes he was cured by it. “The next day was fine. Whether it was because of that or not… For me it was,” he declared.

The CPI had requested that the president be indicted on suspicion of committing crimes of quackery. The PGR asked the STF (Supreme Federal Court), however, that the case be closed on the grounds that Bolsonaro “sincerely believed” that the remedies could be effective.

Bolsonaro also resumed his criticism of clauses in contracts for the purchase of vaccines due to the fact that companies are not responsible for side effects and recalled when he mentioned that a person could “turn into an alligator” if they were immunized.

“The world has fallen on my head, figure of speech can’t use anymore,” he complained. He mentioned that there are “people wary” with vaccines against Covid and that he gave freedom to the population to choose whether they wanted to receive the injection.

The president was applauded as he criticized senators Omar Aziz (PSD-AM) and Randolfe Rodrigues (Rede-AP), president and vice president of the Covid CPI, and Renan Calheiros (MDB-AL), rapporteur for the commission.

Bolsonaro said he could have “quickly ended” with the CPI if he had accepted a proposal that authorized states to buy vaccines that had not been endorsed by Anvisa and without bidding. “I was the one who paid the bill. We didn’t accept that and they accused me at the end of charlatanism”, he declared.

The president again criticized the Supreme Court and said that the Judiciary “has been legislating a lot in the last three years”.

Bolsonaro was accompanied by the Minister of Health, Marcelo Queiroga. The meeting was closed, but the president broadcast his speech on social media. Queiroga said that “public health policies” and the “importance of the unified health system” were discussed.

The minister cited concern about monkeypox and said that the federal government is taking all necessary measures.

Until this Tuesday (26), Brazil had already registered 813 confirmed cases of the disease, according to the Ministry of Health, and is the sixth country with the most occurrences. WHO (World Health Organization) technical leader for monkeypox, Rosamund Lewis, declared at a press conference that “the situation in Brazil [para a doença] it’s worrying”.
