Minas Gerais investigates a possible 1st case of the omicron variant in the state

by

A patient has been hospitalized in isolation for three days in Belo Horizonte with suspicion of contamination by the omicron variant of the coronavirus. The woman left Congo, Africa, on November 17, passed through Turkey and disembarked in São Paulo on November 20, traveling by land to the capital of Minas Gerais.

The 33-year-old patient, who did not have her name or nationality revealed, is admitted to Hospital Eduardo de Menezes, a reference in the state for the treatment of infectious diseases.

A 22-year-old woman who was suspected of having coronavirus in January 2020, after arriving from Wuhan, China, then considered the epicenter of the pandemic, was also hospitalized at the institution. The suspicion was not confirmed.

The patient who is hospitalized at Eduardo de Menezes sought medical care in the municipal health network only last Sunday (28). The woman claimed not to have been vaccinated against Covid-19, according to information from the Municipal Health Department.

He also said that he had taken a test to detect the disease before boarding the Congo, and that the result was negative. The Cievs (Center for Strategic Health Surveillance Information) was called and asked for the genotyping of the virus to confirm whether it is really an infection by the new variant. There is no information about the patient’s health status.

The material collected for the test was sent to Funed (Ezequiel Dias Foundation) and the forecast is that the result will come out by Friday (3). The State Department of Health states that, so far, the case of Eduardo de Menezes’ patient is the only suspect for omicron in Minas Gerais.

The folder claims to have received on November 26 a risk statement sent by the Strategic Information Center for Health Surveillance of the Ministry of Health on the new variant of the virus, identified in South Africa. The WHO (World Health Organization) treats the strain as a variant of concern.

“In-depth studies are still needed to identify the impact of mutations on characteristics such as transmissibility, lethality and efficacy of vaccines against Covid-19”, says the secretariat, in a note.

“It is a variant with genetic alterations suspected of affecting the characteristics of the virus with some indication of future risk, but whose evidence of epidemiological impact is not clear at the moment”, says the folder.
