Opinion – Julio Abramczyk: Presidential health advisor retires

by

The Biden administration’s presidential adviser for the Covid-19 pandemic, doctor Anthony Fauci, 81, will retire from the US public service in December. He has also been director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases for 38 years.

Fauci held the same position with eight American presidents and also during the presidency of Donald Trump, having been greatly opposed by him and his advisors for his guidance in controlling the pandemic.

In 2020, Trump tried to fire him but failed because his appointment is not political. It is part of the career of public health officials.

The ex-president’s disgust exploded because in the early days of the pandemic, Fauci was always present in the media, guiding the population. His critics then falsely accused him of seeking fame.

Some Trump aides even tried to ridicule him, publicizing that everything he said was wrong.
They failed, as they were based on lies against a person who told the truth based on science, Fauci told the press in relation to these episodes.

The Covid-19 pandemic has shown in several countries, including Brazil, that public health care has been hampered by the incompetence of some politicians.

Fortunately, the evolution of science has allowed the rapid development of effective vaccines against the new coronavirus to protect the population.

In these months leading up to retirement, Fauci continues to remember the importance of community protection measures: wearing masks indoors, necessary application of vaccines and hand washing.
