What happens in your brain when you have sex – Orgasm produces a combination of chemicals

by

The more erogenous zones you stimulate at once, the more intense your climax will be

Pure Wow collaborated with Dr. Nan Wise, neuroscience researcher and author of Why Good Sex Matters, on everything that happens in our brains during sex.

1. Blood flow to the brain increases

According to Wise, the brain is the most powerful sexual organ in existence – a claim supported by her research on the female orgasm. Initially, genital stimulation produces so much information to the muscles and nerves that the brain experiences a significant increase in blood flow and oxygen.

2. Area of the brain connected to the genitals is activated

In other words, it is the part of the brain that is activated by stimulation. Until recently, the genital sensory cortex was only identified in men… but it turns out that the same part of the brain is activated when a woman’s vagina, clitoris, cervix and/or nipples are stimulated. (The more erogenous zones you stimulate at once, the more intense your climax will be)

3. Hormones

In her research on the subject, Wise found that brain activity in many areas “gradually increased until orgasm, peaked at orgasm, and then decreased.” One of the areas affected is the nucleus accumbens – a key part of the brain that has been associated with pleasure, reward-motivated behavior and addiction and runs on dopamine. Its activity also increases during sex and peaks at orgasm, resulting in increased levels of serotonin and endorphins. In other words, an orgasm (and what leads up to one) produces a combination of chemicals that bring joy and peace.
