West Nile virus: 146 cases in Greece – New recommendations from EODY

by

The virus is in a period of exacerbation as the EODY informs and for this reason it warns to protect people who belong to vulnerable groups

New information on West Nile virus infections in Greece was issued by EODY, at the same time publishing new precautionary recommendations for citizens.

As announced by EODY, the cases now amount to 146 from the beginning of 2022 until August 31. 134 of them are located in the Region of Central Macedonia.

In the announcement, it is also pointed out that the virus is in a period of exacerbation and more incidents are expected in the country in the near future.

For this reason, the EODY recommends “the scrupulous observance of individual protection measures against mosquitoes, in the wider areas where incidents are recorded during the current period, but also throughout the territory”.

Elderly people, immunosuppressed people, and people with chronic underlying diseases must scrupulously observe mosquito protection measures, as are more likely to become seriously ill, EODY warns.

The announcement in detail

In continuation of previous relevant updates, EODY again recommends that you take precautionary measures against mosquito bites with particular consistency.

In the period 2022, until 31/08/2022, a total of 146 cases of West Nile virus infection have been diagnosed in the country, of which 134 in the Region of Central Macedonia, nine (9) in the Region of Thessaly and three (3) cases is under investigation. The current period of 2022 is characterized by particularly intense activity of the virus, with an increased number of incidents recorded in the above areas. As we are at the peak of the seasonal outbreak of the virus, further incidents are expected in the country, as well as in other European countries, in the near future.

Therefore, the scrupulous observance of individual protection measures against mosquitoes is recommended, in the wider areas where incidents are recorded during the current period, but also throughout the territory (given the unpredictable circulation of the virus):

Use approved body and environmental insect repellents, screens, mosquito nets, air conditioners/fans, appropriate (long) clothing.
Do not leave standing water anywhere.

Older people, immunosuppressed people, and people with chronic underlying diseases in particular need to scrupulously adhere to mosquito protection measures, as they are more at risk of becoming seriously ill.

As in any period of transmission, the EODY carries out enhanced epidemiological surveillance of the disease, informs health professionals, immediately investigates the incidents and informs the competent national and local authorities, with the aim of timely implementation of targeted response and prevention measures, at the local level .

More information on West Nile virus and mosquito protection measures can be found on the EODY website (https://eody.gov.gr/disease/ios-toy-dytikoy-neiloy/). For the evolution of the seasonal outbreak of the disease and the areas where cases have occurred, you can be informed by the weekly report of the EODY (every Tuesday), which also describes in detail the actions carried out by the national public health authorities to deal with disease.
