WHO says end of Covid-19 pandemic may be near

by

The Covid-19 pandemic is not over yet, but the current scenario is an indication that the end may be near. That’s what the director general of the WHO (World Health Organization), Tedros Adnahom, said.

“Last week, the number of weekly deaths reported by Covid-19 was the lowest since March 2020. We have never been in a better position for the end of the pandemic. We are not there yet, but the end is in sight,” said the director. .

Adnahom drew attention that the scenario is an opportunity to end the pandemic. Therefore, it would be an ideal time to maintain measures against Sars-CoV-2 (the virus that causes Covid-19).

“If we don’t seize the opportunity now, we risk more variants, more deaths, more outbreaks and more uncertainty,” he said.

The scenario led the WHO to launch today six reports on the measures that must be taken by national and local governments to achieve the end of the pandemic. The measurements are based on previously reported scientific evidence.

Among the recommendations, there are measures for testing, vaccination and creation of communication systems and monitoring of disease risks.
