An outbreak of Covid hit 49 of the 62 residents of Lar dos Velhinhos de Jales, in the interior of São Paulo, in the last two weeks. By the afternoon of Tuesday (7), three elderly people had died.
Seven employees also tested positive, out of a total of approximately 30 at the institution — the rest are awaiting test results.
The first death, of an 83-year-old man, was recorded on Sunday (5). The next day, a 69-year-old woman who was intubated and on dialysis also died. The two patients were hospitalized at the Santa Casa in the city.
The third death was on Saturday (4), but confirmation that the cause of death was Covid-19 came out this Tuesday morning (7). The victim was a 76-year-old elderly woman who had a cardiac arrest. Both women had heart problems as comorbidities. The elderly person had no previous health problems, as reported.
Long-term institutions, such as Lar dos Velhinhos, shelter the group most vulnerable to the coronavirus, people over 60 years of age, many of them with comorbidities.
When there is a record of a suspected or confirmed case of the disease, the protocol is to trigger the health agencies and health surveillance, which, according to the institution, was done and the elderly have been monitored since then.
Of the infected inmates, four are admitted to the ICU (Intensive Care Unit) of Santa Casa de Jales. The health condition of one of them is serious, and three should be discharged this week. The other elderly are asymptomatic and remain at home receiving medical care.
In a statement, the institution explained that the first positive results for coronaviruses were detected in November, when an employee presented the first symptoms of the disease, such as flu and a runny nose, and was removed from work.
Then, the other employees and residents of the home were tested, proving the outbreak of the disease at the site.
The institution claims that, of the seven employees who also tested positive, only one remains in social isolation. The others have already completed quarantine and returned to work.
The house also claims that all seniors took the booster dose of the Covid-19 vaccine on November 12th. The first symptoms would have started seven days later, that is, insufficient time for the new application of the vaccine to induce the organism to defend itself against the coronavirus — the time, according to studies, is normally two weeks.
Until this Monday (6), Jales registered a total of 8,703 confirmed cases and 274 deaths by Covid.
