Ariane Titmus is “hanging up” her cap. The Aussie swimming star has finally decided to retire before the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028 and at just 25, the highlight of her career was the way she won the gold medal in the 400m freestyle final at the Paris Olympics against Summer Mackintosh and Katie Ledecky.

Titmus has won four Olympic gold medals in her long career, the same number in the world 50m pool, two in the world 25m, seven in the Commonwealth Games, as well as the world record holder in the 200m freestyle.

Titmus announced the news of her retirement through a video on her social media. “I feel it is the right time to stop swimming. The pursuit was relentless and I gave my best. I leave knowing that I have done everything with no regrets. I am complete, satisfied and happy.

After Paris I had the opportunity to experience what life is like without swimming and what “turned the switch” in me were some health problems that arose before the Olympics. Until now, swimming was the most important thing in my life, but now the goals I have set in my personal life take priority.

Nothing compares to your first gold. She was in the final of the 400m freestyle against Katie Ledecky. Without Ledeki, I would not be the same swimmer. It changed the sport and I am grateful to have been a part of such a controversy. To win, I didn’t just have to be the best in the world, but the best of all time.”
