Disruptive discovery in Britain: Any heart disease will be detected from the eyes

In less than a minute, predictive tool detects heart problems

The eyes as a “mirror” of the heart were used by scientists in Britain, who discovered an artificial intelligence predictive tool through which it can be determined whether someone is at risk of heart problems.

According to the scientists, the predictive tool analyzes images of the eyes and accurately predicts in less than a minute, a person’s risk of developing cardiovascular disease.

The findings reinforce evidence from previous studies that the eyes are a useful ‘window’ to cardiovascular health in the context of a personalized approach. The new achievement, with the help of technology, paves the way for a new efficient and non-invasive examination that will not even need to be done in a medical center, but in the ophthalmologist or other doctor’s office itself or even from mobile units on the road using a camera.

The researchers, led by epidemiology professor Alicia Regina Rudnicka of St George’s University of London, who made the relevant publication in the British Journal of Ophthalmology “British Journal of Ophthalmology“, according to the “Guardian”, they developed the “smart” tool Quartz, which they “trained” with eye images of a total of 88,052 people aged 40-69, regarding the arteries and veins in the retina of the eye.

The model was then tested on eye images of 7,411 people aged 48-92, taking into account other factors for each person, such as smoking history, taking antihypertensive drugs, previous heart attacks or strokes, etc. The system was able to make correct predictions of future cardiovascular risk.

“The new AI tool can allow someone to know their cardiovascular risk level within 60 seconds at the most. This will improve cardiovascular health and save lives,” said Dr. Rudnika, adding that this would enable someone to get early drug treatment (eg, statins) or another operation.

Coronary heart disease, heart failure, strokes and other cardiovascular diseases are a leading cause of death worldwide. Although various existing tests predict the relative risk, they are not always able to accurately identify who will develop a cardiovascular problem in the future. The new AI enabled retinal vasculometry test is added to the available medical “arsenal”, offering an additional or alternative solution to routine blood tests or blood pressure measurements.
