Venous thromboembolism: The leading cause of in-hospital death

by

What are the surgeries and medical procedures that are considered to increase the risk of VTE and need special attention.

One in four people worldwide die from conditions related to thrombosis. Thrombosis in general is mainly responsible for the first 3 cardiovascular causes of death worldwide: Stroke Episode, the ‘Heart attack of Myocardium and Venous Thromboembolic Disease.

In our country, it is estimated that annual deaths reach 50,000. A major risk factor for development Venous Thromboembolism (VTE), is the hospital stay. Over 60% of all cases of venous thrombosis occur during or within 90 days of a hospital stay, making it a leading but preventable cause of death.

Patients with reduced mobility – due to bed rest or recovery or who are hospitalized due to surgery or serious injury are more likely to develop thrombosis, all the speakers emphasized during a Press Conference organized by the Institute for Study and Education in Thrombosis and Antithrombotic Education (IMETHA), on the occasion of the celebration of World Thrombosis Day (October 13).

Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is the leading cause of in-hospital death worldwide emphasized Miltiadis Matsagas, Professor of Vascular Surgery at the University of Thessaly, President of I.M.E.T.A. The disease consists of Peripheral Vein Thrombosis and Pulmonary Embolism.

Recent studies have shown that many hospitalized patients at risk of VTE do not receive thromboprophylaxis, which is done by administering the appropriate antithrombotic drugs, applying elastic stockings and with appropriate intubation within the Hospital or Rehabilitation Center, while in some others the diagnosis of VTE it is delayed as the disease for which they were admitted to the Hospital comes to the fore, the Professor pointed out.

Scientists urge hospitals, health care systems, policy makers and hospital quality control organizations in our country to make VTE risk assessment and prevention protocol a priority for patient safety and reducing in-hospital mortality. Mr. Matsagas.

Certain surgeries and medical procedures explained Dimitris Richter, member of the Board of Directors of I.M.E.T.A., it is considered that they increase the risk of VTE. Indicative:

Orthopedic surgery (eg total hip or knee surgery)

Major general surgery (especially involving the abdomen, pelvis, hip or legs)

Major gynecological surgery

Urological surgery

Neurosurgery

Cardiothoracic surgery

Major vascular surgery

Chemotherapy for the treatment of cancer

“If you or a loved one will undergo one of these procedures, be sure to ask for a VTE risk assessment and talk about preventing it,” urges Mr. Richter, adding that prevention, early diagnosis and treatment of thrombosis will lead to in the reduction of deaths from thrombosis and in the significant reduction of the total mortality rates, but it will also improve the quality of life in our country.
