Teamwork is needed to fight cancer, emphasized the Commissioner for Health and Food Safety, Stella Kyriakidou speaking at the World Health Summit. As he pointed out, “we cannot overcome cancer alone – this applies to individual patients, to countries and to the world as a whole”.
Ms. Kyriakidou noted that “partnerships are essential – at every level – and the EU will continue to work closely with partners on cancer.”
He also said that the European plan for cancer seeks cooperation beyond the European Union, with international partners, so that there can be better results worldwide.
“Sustainable, resilient and accessible health systems are the basis for healthy societies – and we support Member States’ efforts to build just that. We have committed a total of 4 billion euros to implement what we promised” the commissioner underlined and explained that tackling inequalities is another crucial objective of the European plan.
“In the EU, this means that everyone should have the same access to cancer prevention, screening, treatment and care – no matter where they live,” he said.
Finally, Stella Kyriakidou stated that cancer is the leading cause of death worldwide, with almost 10 million deaths in 2020, underlining that “we must take urgent and collective action to reverse this trend”.
