Folha launches series on breast cancer; watch

by

In what has become known as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Sheet launches a series to address the symptoms, diagnosis and treatment of the disease. The videos, with a lighter language that connects the message to the public on social networks, are published on the newspaper’s Instagram.

The series is presented by journalist Susana Bragatto, who maintains a blog at Sheet and already had the disease. In the first episode, which is on air, she explains the origin of October Rosa and brings data about cancer in the country.

The objective of the campaign is to disseminate information on the subject and strengthen the recommendations of the Ministry of Health for early diagnosis.

The movement emerged in the 1990s in the United States, from the event Race for the Cure, organized by the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. Participants received a pink bow and, since then, the color has been used in reference to the theme.

In Brazil, the initiative arrived in 2002. Since then, institutions and civil society have moved to highlight the importance of disease prevention and treatment.

In the world, breast cancer has surpassed lung cancer and has become the most common type, that is, the most diagnosed, according to the WHO (World Health Organization).

In Brazil, according to data from the National Cancer Institute (Inca), in 2021 alone, 66,280 new cases of the disease were detected in the country – this type of cancer is the one that kills the most Brazilians.

Breast cancer is more common in more developed regions, which explains a higher incidence in the South and Southeast of Brazil.

Although the campaign is more targeted at women, 1% of people affected are men. Therefore, care also applies to men’s health.

It is important to keep preventive exams up to date and, at any sign of abnormality, to seek a doctor to ask questions.
