An appeal to parents who are reluctant to vaccinate their children, to decide on vaccination, in order to protect both the physical and mental health of their children, but also the open school, addresses her in an interview with the FM Agency and on the show of Tania H Mantouvalou “104, 9 HEALTH SECRETS” the professor of Pediatrics and Infectious Diseases, and member of the Committee of Experts of the Ministry of Health Mariza Tsolia.
Talking about the side effects of the vaccine, he explains that they are mild local, or systemic (fever, headache, malaise, body aches) that do not matter so much. As for the myocarditis that somehow concerns people, it seems according to the professor that it is mild and will subside soon. “It occurs mainly in adolescent boys and young adults. It is less common at young ages. According to EOF, in our country the frequency is about one in 10,000 vaccinations in boys 12-17 years old, after the second dose. The risk of developing myocarditis is much lower with the vaccine than with the disease. “Because if he gets sick, the risk is 6 times greater than if he is vaccinated, and it is even more serious.”
The disease in children is very mild, says Ms. Tsolia. “In general, 1% of the cases we know need hospitalization. And of those who are hospitalized, less than 2%, around 1.5% will need ICU, while deaths are one in 40,000 cases in Greece. Some children may develop this multisystemic hyperinflammatory syndrome, which is similar to Kawasaki and can affect many systems of the body. Its incidence, as estimated in the US, is one in 3,000 infections. “And it can also occur in children who have had the infection without symptoms.”
Contrary to what we knew at the beginning of the pandemic, according to the distinguished pediatrician, children catch and transmit the infection just like adults, with recent studies showing that there is not much difference. Regarding long-covid syndrome, Ms. Tsolia says that experts do not know how common it is in children, to add that it seems to be less common than in adults, but it does not cease to exist.
Closed schools are a disaster, he points out elsewhere in the interview, noting that according to a meta-analysis, 1 in 4 children show symptoms of anxiety neurosis and 1 in 5 have symptoms of depression. “So it seems that there is a very serious consequence of closed schools and quarantine on the mental health of children and adolescents. “And in this we must give great importance as a society and avoid closing the schools at all costs, once again.”
Regarding the course of the pandemic, Ms. Tsolia states that there is a stabilization of cases and a control of the situation. “So we are waiting for the next period to see the imports decrease. This takes a few weeks. And the admissions to the ICU even more, and the deaths finally “. For the children, he says that there is probably a flattening in the older ages 12-17, which is probably due to the application of the vaccine, but it is a fact that continues, that there are many cases in the age group 4-11 and constantly increasing. The teacher does not hide her fear of a resurgence of the pandemic during the festive days, when people are crowded indoors, and for this reason she emphasizes the importance of vaccination for all, the observance of measures, but also the use of self tests before each concentration.
