Spanish scientists brought to light the only case known worldwide 36 years old woman, who has survived 12 different tumors, at least five of which were aggressive cancers.
The first tumor appeared when the patient was still a baby, and then, every few years, other tumors followed.
Before she was even 40 years old, the patient had developed total 12 volumesof which at least five were malignant and aggressive.
Each tumor was a different type and appeared in a different part of her body. But her immune system in all cases generated a strong natural anti-inflammatory response, managing to fight the cancers.
“We still do not understand how this person could have developed during the fetal stage, nor how he was able to overcome all his pathological problems,” said Dr. Marcos Maloubres and emphasized that no similar case has been reported internationally to date.
The researchers from Spain’s National Center for Oncological Research (CNIO), led by Dr. Maloubres, who made the relevant publication in the scientific journal “Science Advances”, reported that the unusual case may open new avenues for early diagnosis and more effective cancer immunotherapy.

As the scientists estimate, the patient’s unprecedented long-term defensive ability appears to be linked to mutations she has inherited from both her parents in a gene (MAD1L1), which plays an essential role in the process of cell division and proliferation.
“Scientifically we cannot talk about a new syndrome because it is a description of a unique case, but biologically it is something like that,” said researcher Miguel Urioste.
