“As the pressure on the health system increases, so does the quality of care of intubated people in Greece, resulting in more deaths,” points out an extensive study signed by Professors Theodoros Lytras and Sotiris Tsiodras and published in a reputable medical review. He adds that this phenomenon occurs even when the NSS is not at its limits, while it is exacerbated outside Attica.
Research published in the Scandinavian Journal of Public Health points out that although public health services in Greece have increased significantly during the pandemic, the quality of health under the pressure of increased hospital admissions has received less attention.
Examining the data of all intubated Covid-19 patients in the country from September 1, 2020 to May 6, 2021, the leading Greek scientists in the field concluded that the increased pressure in hospitals leads to a higher mortality rate among intubated patients.
Thus the risk of death gradually increases for every hundred intubated in the Greek health system, as over 400 simultaneously intubated their risk of death increases on average by 1.25 times compared to numbers below 400, while when it exceeds 800 intubated the risk is 1.57 times larger.
In addition, research has shown that the risk of death from coronavirus increases significantly for intubation outside intensive care units or outside Attica.
With these data, Greek scientists emphasize the need for significant enhancement of health care services, focusing on the quality of care provided, in addition to simply expanding the capacity of ICU beds.
