Lower socioeconomic status and chronic health problems, particularly asthma, are associated with increased risk post-Covid syndrome, also known as long Covid-19, in teenagers, shows a new Swiss scientific study.

The researchers, led by Dr. Idris Gesus of the University of Geneva, who made the relevant publication in the journal “Nature Communications”, analyzed data on 1,034 children, finding that approximately 14% of adolescents with a history of Covid-19 infection had continuous at least one symptom that lasted for three months or more.

The incidence of long-term Covid-19 in children and adolescents is not yet well understood. It is also difficult to determine whether some common symptoms, such as fatigue, are due to the previous coronavirus infection or other causes.

The new research found that persistent symptoms in adolescents aged 12 to 17 years is 8% more frequent to those who had passed Covid-19. On the other hand, in the youngest children six months to 11 years of age, no significant difference was found in the frequency of persistent symptoms between those with a history of Covid-19 and those who had not been infected by the coronavirus in the past.
