“Off-radar” is the exact number of Omicron cases in Greece. This means that it can only be calculated with mathematical models.
We would be able to know the exact number of Omicron cases if it were possible to send all the positive tests for genomic surveillance, which is not possible. We can control up to 3% of cases for mutations, including Omicron. About 1,100 cases are checked weekly.
For example, 4,766 cases were announced today for examination and 140, 3% will be sent. In fact, in previous weeks we had up to 8,000 cases a day. Only 1% of them can be sent to laboratories.
The genomic control laboratories in our country
The laboratories that do genomic testing to detect mutations, including Omicron, are:
Most tests come to Athens, at the Institute for Biomedical Research, about 750 a week. Several tests are analyzed in Crete, at the Laboratory of Clinical Virology about 100 per week. Most samples from Northern Greece go to CERTH (National Center for Research and Technological Development), about 200 per week. However, this is a time consuming process, requiring four to five days.
