Hyaluronic acid: In the right hands it works “miracles”

by

Hyaluronic acid is one of the greatest discoveries of the 21st century in the field of cosmetic plastic surgery, for two reasons.

The first is that it allows the plastic surgeon to improve without a scalpel (non-invasively), painlessly, with absolute safety and with a quick recovery the features of the face, the décolletage area, the hands, the buttocks, scars, tissue deficits, etc.

The second reason is that it can be manufactured in the laboratory as a product of genetic engineering, without animal experiments, and used in the human body with excellent results.

“Its wonderful properties are constantly expanding the field of its applications, but at the same time they have given a strong impetus to a ‘parallel universe’ of beliefs and applications that have nothing to do with the reality of this particular substance and its action.

For this reason, but also because it is an innovative therapeutic agent that has to do with all genders and is aimed at all ages, it is good to know a few things about hyaluronic acid”, points out Dr. George A. Papageorgiou, MD, PhD FEBOPRAS, Plastic Surgeon, Fellow of the Metropolitan Hospital.

#1 It’s not “sour”
Although the word “acid” is included in its name, it is not a substance with caustic properties, it does not “burn” the tissues as it would for example. the nitric acid. It is a polysaccharide (glycosaminoprotein) found naturally in the human body (skin, joints, eyes, tendons), being a structural component of it (it also exists in most organisms and in all types of tissues). It is produced at a constant rate by certain cells called fibroblasts (along with collagen and elastin). These intertwine with each other in the form of protein chains and together with other substances (fibroclasts) create the skin.

Its primary “mission” in the body is to hydrate the tissues, as it is an extremely hydrophilic component (it binds up to 1,000 times its weight in water). Fibroblasts in the skin continuously produce hyaluronic acid while fibroclasts break it down, in a dynamic 24-48 hour cycle, so that there is a balance of hyaluronic acid production-breakdown.

Over time, however, this balance is disturbed at the expense of the hyaluronic acid produced, resulting in dehydration and thinning of the skin, which becomes brittle and shows wrinkles, folds and signs of atrophy. “Knowing this mechanism and now having at our disposal hyaluronic acid of non-animal origin, prepared under specific and strict specifications in reliable laboratories, so that it causes rare or even no allergic reactions, we are able to effectively intervene in this process “, explains the doctor.

#2 How it works
“By placing hyaluronic acid in gel form under aseptic conditions in special syringes, we are able to inject it with very fine needles into the area where the problem is located. So we can eliminate the signs of time, “erase” surface wrinkles, improve deeper wrinkles or impressions, correct facial imperfections, improve its features, give volume or replace volume in places that have been lost ( such as after oncological operations), to deeply hydrate the skin, with an almost “magical” ingredient, which is accepted by the body as if it had been produced by our own body”, the expert points out.
Thanks to this compatibility and the fact that it is placed in the depth of the wrinkle/fold/impression, the hyaluronic acid is completely integrated, resulting in a few days after its application, it is hardly distinguishable or not at all. It is used either as a filler or as a product for mesotherapy.

#3 He wants the right hands
Even an ingredient so compatible with the body only works when it is prepared in the right way, when provided by the right hands and in the right amount for each case.

“The right way is the one that differentiates the indication in use (degree of cross-linking or crosslinking), that is, the way the hyaluronic acid molecules are connected to each other, dictates whether we will use it to replace the volume that has been lost from various points of the face or to deeply hydrate the skin.

However, in addition to the selection of the appropriate material in composition, it is also very important to administer it in the appropriate quantity, so that there is correction and not overcorrection with unnatural and often unpleasant results, as the excessive use of materials is what leads to distortions, many times irreversible.

All of the above require scientific knowledge, specialization and concern “the right hands”, i.e. the hands of an expert and no one else”, concludes Dr. Papageorgiou.
