Empty shelves in stocks of inhalants, antihistamines and antibiotics – Increase in hospitalizations

Report: Anastasia Karvounis

For increasing incidence of infections the pediatrician spoke to the children on Skai.gr Spyridon Mazanis and the president of the Panhellenic Federation of Independent Pediatricians Konstantinos Daloukas.

According to Mr. Mazanis, every week is recorded 20% increase in the number of children affected by infections, while 1 in 10 children who develop a fever needs immediate hospitalizationadding that there is no accurate picture of the number of infections, as the tests are not declared.

At the same time, he sketched the image of the hospitals, characterizing them as “suffocatingly full”, while he added that there is no possibility of finding beds, as children with related diseases can be hospitalized in the same room.

These infections mainly concern respiratory infections with fever and five different types of viruses:
• Influenza A and B
• Adenovirus
• Respiratory RSV
• Pneumococcus
• Streptococcus

Worrying is the assurance of the two pediatricians that it will be “difficult winter“, with the situation getting worse over the next two months, while they leave open the possibility that the children’s weakened immunity is explained by the spread of Covid-19 and the isolation of the children due to the lockdowns.

“I have never given so many drugs in my life” said Mr. Daloukas characteristically, while both pediatricians talk about empty shelves stocked with inhalants, antihistamines and antibiotics.

Finally, they pointed out basic instructions to the guardians, such as that children should never go to school sick, that their return to it will be done after they have spent 24 hours without symptoms and that the best antidote for everything is proper hygiene and prevention, i.e. the vaccination.
