Only 19 municipalities in Brazil reported not having confirmed cases of Covid-19 in 2021. This is what a survey released this Thursday (8) by the IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics) points out.

On the other hand, a portion made up of 5,549 municipalities –almost the totality (5,570)– reported clinically or laboratory confirmed records last year.

According to the IBGE, only two cities did not respond to the survey – Porto de Moz (PA) and São José (SC). The data are part of the Municipal Basic Information Survey 2021.

The 19 municipalities without confirmations are distributed in 11 states: São Paulo (4), Minas Gerais (4), Rio Grande do Sul (2), Bahia (2), Alagoas (1), Amazonas (1), Ceará (1) , Goiás (1), Maranhão (1), Piauí (1) and Tocantins (1).

These municipalities are mostly small. Nine add up to 5,000 inhabitants. Another five gather from 5,001 to 10,000 people.

The Midwest (99.8%), Northeast (99.7%) and South (99.7%) had the highest concentrations of municipalities with confirmed cases of Covid-19 in 2021. The North, in turn, had the lowest (99.3%). The proportion in the Southeast was 99.5%.

The IBGE states that, of the 5,570 municipalities in the country, 5,343 (95.9%) had public or private places with conditions to carry out PCR-type or serological tests in patients with suspected Covid-19.

Of the 5,549 municipalities with confirmed cases, 3,704 (66.8%) reported the installation of screening tents to combat the coronavirus. These structures were set up to care for people with respiratory symptoms and eventually refer them to hospitals.

The North (75.4%), Northeast and Midwest regions (both with 71%) had the highest concentrations of municipalities with the installation of screening tents, says the IBGE. The Southeast had the lowest (59%).

Also according to the institute, of the 5,549 municipalities that reported cases of Covid-19, 5,517 (99.4%) declared the need for hospitalization of people affected by the disease.

Of the 5,517 with hospitalization records, 5,468 (99.1%) indicated the occurrence of at least one death.
