Atsalakis in SKAI for Omicron: We will have an exponential increase in cases – They will surpass Delta

by

Giorgos Atsalakis, associate professor at the Technical University of Crete, spoke to SKAI and Sia Kosioni about the Omicron mutation and what to expect.

Mr. Atsalakis said that in order to judge how dangerous Omicron is, we must examine contagion, morbidity and mortality. “At the moment we only have reliable data on transmissibility. “Transmissibility is extremely high,” he said.

The professor explained that when we reach 50 to 100 cases of Omicron, in the next 2-3 weeks, we will have an exponential increase in cases and soon the cases will exceed those of Delta, which took 20 weeks.

Also of concern are “orphan” cases that are difficult to detect. “We do not know what percentage of cases will end up in hospital. “The transmission speed is 4 times faster than Delta,” he said.

“In the next 2-3 weeks we will be able to say what is going to happen. We do not have to wait for the data to make decisions. “What we are seeing is already worrying”, added Mr. Atsalakis.

Finally, referring to the data of South Africa, he said that they show that the Omicron wave reached its peak after a month.

He stressed that Omicron bypasses the natural immunity and the 2 doses of vaccination, while the 3rd dose offers a fairly high percentage of protection.
