Professor and former first lady of São Paulo Ana Estela Haddad should head the Digital Health Secretariat of the Ministry of Health, a folder that will be created during the administration of president-elect Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT). The invitation was made by the future Minister of Health, Nísia Trindade, and, according to people accompanying the discussions, it was accepted.
Such as Sheet anticipated, Lula’s team in Health suggested the creation of a secretariat focused on SUS technology. With that, Datasus (SUS’s IT system) would be directed to the new folder —which should also take care of the telehealth area.
Earlier this month, Ana Estela took over as full professor at the Department of Orthodontics and Pediatric Dentistry at the Faculty of Dentistry at USP. She is the first woman to hold the position in the institution’s history.
Ana Estela has knowledge in the field of telehealth and acts as coordinator of the Telehealth and Teledentistry Nucleus at the Faculty of Dentistry at USP. She is also a member of the Advisory Committee of the Telemedicine University Network and Scientific Director of the Brazilian Association of Telemedicine and Telehealth.
She has also served as an advisor to the Minister of Education from 2003 to 2005 and was Director of Health Education Management at the Ministry of Health’s Secretariat for Work Management and Health Education from 2005 to 2012.
Ana Estela is married to the future Minister of Finance, Fernando Haddad. The graduated president announced Haddad’s choice for the position at the beginning of the month.
Nísia Trindade’s press office said that the future minister is still in negotiations and has not finalized all the names that will make up her team. It is expected to be released on the 2nd of January.
The president of Conass (National Council of Health Secretaries), Nésio Fernandes, was invited and should occupy the Primary Health Care Secretariat of the Ministry of Health.
Fernandes has also been Secretary of Health for Espírito Santo since January 2019. He is a sanitary doctor, specialist in preventive and social medicine and in health administration.
Also from Espírito Santo, epidemiologist Ethel Maciel should occupy the Health Surveillance Secretariat. She is a professor in the department of nursing at the Health Sciences Center at Ufes (Federal University of Espírito Santo).
Ethel Maciel had received 26 votes from the University Council, which decides the triple list that is sent to the federal government, to assume the rectory of Ufes. However, President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) opted for another name.
The SCTIE (Secretary of Science, Technology and Strategic Inputs) should be headed by Carlos Gadelha. Doctor in economics from UFRJ (Federal University of Rio de Janeiro), he was vice president of Fiocruz (Oswaldo Cruz Foundation) and served in ministries during the previous administrations of Lula and Dilma Rousseff (PT).
The folder that should be occupied by Gadelha is considered strategic for dealing with research, in addition to partnerships between public and private laboratories for the production of inputs and medicines.
Announced on Thursday (22) for the command of the Ministry of Health in the Lula government, sociologist Nísia Trindade Lima, 64, is the first woman to hold the position in almost 70 years of the ministry’s history.
Nísia joins at a time when the transitional government sees a historic dismantling of the SUS, with a loss of resources, a drop in vaccination coverage and a lack of coordination with states and municipalities.
Graduated in social sciences, master in political science, doctor in sociology, Nísia assumed the presidency of Fiocruz in 2017, currently serving her second term. She has been an employee of the foundation since 1987.
Elected with 60% of the votes of Fiocruz workers, researchers and professors, she was the first woman to preside over the centennial institution, a reference in science, public health and health technology in Latin America.
Nísia led Fiocruz’s agreement with AstraZeneca for the production of vaccines against Covid-19 in Brazil. During her management, the foundation was chosen by the WHO (World Health Organization) as a center for the development and production of vaccines using messenger RNA technology in Latin America.
