Pull the rope from the fishnet, under the sympathetic eyes of the fishermen, and help separate the small, worthless fish to return to the water.
Feel with your feet the beach cookies and stars in the sand on the bottom of the sea and dive to catch by hand. Marvel at the myriad of little feet moving on each arm. Watch the moon rise red and huge over the ocean horizon in neck-deep water. Make castles by dripping wet sand between your fingers.
It is perfectly possible to revisit this Ubatuba, or any other place that no longer exists, but lives inside each one. It just depends on us. Not to escape the memory, but to relive the sense of discovery, of the first emotion, of novelty, of questioning. To turn our eyes to what can be, not to what has been lost, for by definition the past cannot be better than the imagined future.
Brazil is far from that. It was taken over by a bunch of resentful, sadistic kids, elected by the vote of people who like to delude themselves or to make people suffer. People for whom killing and torturing may be acceptable. It is not. It’s up to us to prove not.
