Botox Treatment: What Not to Do Immediately After

by

The days of the holidays are almost over. During the previous period, outings increased, people’s relationships warmed up, while there was no shortage of invitations.

Many gifts, small or large, circulated, changed hands and brought excitement. Among them there are some very special ones, the ones we do to ourselves.
“One of the most popular gifts we usually give him at this time is to manage the signs of aging with botulinum toxin injection treatment (mostly known by one of its brand names – Botox). Botulinum toxin treatment is the most popular treatment for “crow’s feet”, mid-frow, forehead wrinkles, in general, for so-called “dynamic expression wrinkles” and this is absolutely justified. It is a non-invasive treatment, easy to apply, with a very good result, as long as some “musts” are observed, which should be kept in mind whether you are trusting the treatment for the first time, or renewing a previous one”, points out Dr. Georgios A. Papageorgiou, MD, PhD FEBOPRAS, Plastic Surgeon, Associate of Metropolitan Hospital.

What you need to know before treatment
Botulinum toxin has been used for decades in large doses to treat spasms in specific muscle groups. Its effectiveness paved the way for its use, in much smaller doses, in aesthetic medicine to limit spasms of the facial muscles (the facial muscles are the ones behind facial expressions and over time are responsible for the creation of wrinkles). The botulinum toxin affects their neuromuscular synapse, reducing their mobility and the result of this action is very spectacular.

The treatment, as long as it is applied by a specialist doctor, who knows the rules of injection, the dosage, how, where and when the toxin should be injected, has no side effects. However, you need to be careful, especially when it comes to some “budget holiday” deals, which can end up costing you a lot more. Example: it can, either because the vial of toxin has been opened and left in the refrigerator for a long time before the treatment for which it is to be used, or because the toxin is injected in a high dilution, or because the correct dose is not given, or because the body you have developed antibodies against the toxin due to more frequent administration than normal, the target muscle group is not completely “paralyzed” and still has movement, or movement begins well before the 6 months that the effect lasts of proper treatment by a specialist.

The application
The application is extremely simple: the recommended amount of botulinum toxin is injected with a very fine needle into specific muscles. Regarding at this stage, in general, keep in mind that the success of the treatment depends on the amount (units) of the toxin per area and not on the number of stings or the amount of solution applied.

What not to do immediately after treatment
There are things you can do immediately after treatment. You can wash your face, smile, frown and generally continue to express yourself with your facial muscles (without exaggeration) and do full makeup as well.

However, if you want to rest, lie down or take a short nap, remember:

You don’t lie on your face
Lie on your back with your head on a high pillow. For how long; For at least four hours after botulinum toxin application. This is because it takes time for the injected material to “sit” properly on your face (this is not to be confused with the normal “swelling” after application, which will take a little longer).

You don’t exercise
It is advisable to avoid exercise and intense fatigue for at least 24 hours after applying the treatment. Your face needs this period of time to “calm down”, especially if bruises and redness have occurred.

Do not rub the injection site
“It is common and very human to ‘put your hand there’, at the injection site, either to ‘feel’ the change by touching it, or to give relief by rubbing the site as the effect of the anesthetic cream has begun to wear off. Don’t do it. Also don’t scratch the spot or pour hot water on it.
Let the skin and muscles of the treatment assimilate the injectable material and in two to seven days when the first results of the treatment will become apparent, you will be completely satisfied”, concludes Dr. Papageorgiou.
