Intervention of the Minister of Health with his letter to the competent Commissioner for EU Health Affairs, Stella Kyriakidou

The Minister of Health Thanos Pleuris is asking for intervention at the level of the European Commission on the issue of the lack of medicines.

Specifically, today the Minister of Health Thanos Pleuris sent a letter to the competent Commissioner for Health Affairs, Stella Kyriakidou, asking for a central policy at the level of the European Union for the problem of the lack of medicines faced by all the member states of the European Union.

As mentioned by the Minister of Health Thanos Pleuris, this problem cannot be dealt with only by internal procedures and the need to have central policies throughout the EU is imperative.

In more detail, the letter sent by the Minister of Health:

“Dear Commissioner,

Recently, the problem of the adequacy of specific medicines has been constantly increasing throughout the EU. It is understood that this is due to the reduced production due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the energy crisis, the war in Ukraine, as well as the reduction of the production process in countries that have raw materials.

The Member States are trying to deal with this problem with internal procedures, but, however, it is imperative that there be central policies at the level of the entire EU. to address the problem.

In the short term, there should be direct coverage of the citizens of the EU Member States. in all pharmaceutical products, while in the medium term, and finally in the long term, the production of medicines in the EU should be strengthened.

In this direction, I am putting the above concerns to you and please, within the framework of your responsibilities, evaluate the above, in order to have a central policy from the EU Member States. to address the shortage of medicines, as it is a matter that concerns the Member States as a whole”.
