“At the moment we are seeing an important outbreak in China. The EU and the European ECDC yesterday in its announcement said that we do not have major concerns like the European Union” emphasized Theoklis Zaoutis
“There is no great danger from China” in terms of COVID, emphasized the president of EODY and professor of Pediatrics and Epidemiology at the University of Pennsylvania, Theoklis Zaoutis, speaking on the First Program of ERT. He noted, however, that there are concerns about mutations.
“Right now we’re seeing a major boom in China. The European Union and the European ECDC yesterday in its statement said that we do not have major concerns like the European Union, because in a very high percentage we have immunity, either from the infection or from the vaccination. Of those people coming in right now from China, because we have the level of immunity and it’s the mutations themselves, there’s not too much risk. Of course, the concerns have to do with mutations, and if there is an uncontrolled spread of the virus, there is a possibility that it will mutate because it will pass through a very large population,” explained Mr. Zaoutis regarding the situation in China.
“We will follow the European Union and the effort is to have a unified response”
Asked if Greece will take measures for travelers from China, Mr. Zaoutis clarified that our country will move to the central line of the European Union. A meeting of the crisis response mechanism is expected today in order to reach a joint step between the Member States to take immediate, common measures for the possible introduction of entry requirements for all those traveling from China. “The effort is to have a single treatment by the European Union towards flights from China to Europe, especially direct flights. We will not do anything on our own. In the last few days, all the discussions between us and with the European Union are to be all on the same line”, he said characteristically.
“The strain circulating from America is covered by the vaccine to a large extent”
Referring to the strain from America and the degree of danger it has, the president of EODY said that the data at the moment show that it is not particularly worrying. “The strain from America, which is a variant of Omicron, is covered by the vaccine to a large extent in terms of severe disease and death, which are the hard indicators we have to watch right now,” he added.
“There is an outbreak of respiratory viruses. The system endures”
Mr. Zaoutis confirmed that there is an outbreak of respiratory viruses, specifically influenza and the RSV virus, while he pointed out that the latter virus was added to the surveillance of the EODY. “RSV is a very common virus that children deal with. Almost all children from babies to 2 years old get RSV. In the last 2-3 years we have had some measures that have reduced the transmission of RSV in these children. These measures have been reduced, reduced, and all those children who did not catch RSV during the pandemic will now catch it along with all the other children. The same could be said about the flu,” explained the Professor of Pediatrics.
Finally, the president of EODY assured that the health system endures, despite the outbreak of viruses that is observed.
