Zdovci: “I’m never happy and satisfied, to bring a winning mentality to the team”

by

After PAOK’s fifth consecutive victory over Peristeri (87-73), the Slovenian coach Yuri Zdovts he emphasized that his goal is to instill a “winning mentality” in the team.

Despite the success, the technician of the “double head of the north” remains demandingacknowledging the difficulty of the program and stressing the need for continuity alertness and devotion by his players.

In detail what he said at the press conference:

Commenting on the match: “Congratulations to my players. Especially since they found energy after the difficult road trip to play the way they did today. I was nervous because we were playing against a very good team. They were undefeated until today. I was worried because they have a way of playing that doesn’t suit us. Lots of play in the low post. Very happy that we found the energy and won. Even if the game shows a difference of 15 points, anyone who saw the match was not an easy victory. We had two similar games against Iraklis and Treptsa that we had won and they reduced us. I had to stay alert as did the players to prevent this from happening again. I think we succeeded.”

On whether it was PAOK’s most “full” game and whether there are… strengths for the continuation: “It’s a long season. A lot can certainly happen. Even the best team in Europe has ups and downs. We have to come out stronger when the going gets tough. The schedule is not convenient as we have continuous trips. There are no “rules” though. We had two difficult away games without Melvin, but we found solutions. One of my goals is to bring a winning mentality to the team. We had a bit of luck in the previous games but maybe we deserved it. Every opponent is difficult, whoever we played.”

On whether he is happy with the length of the match: “My problem is that I am never happy and satisfied. I saw some things from my philosophy. I can’t make everyone happy I’m not… a clown. We have to believe in the players. Today I played with 10 players, everyone who played gave something on the floor, but I believe all of them. The team has to win and everyone knows they have to contribute in their own way.”

For the… rise of heights to the top and out of the basket: “It’s part of the tactic. I noted this in a previous press conference. All our talls have a good long shot. Marvin is a good shooter as is Moore. Sometimes they do it by themselves, sometimes I want them more “inside” the basket. And in defense it is part of the tactics. We also have some good players who are good at driving… you give them the opportunity to have more space.”
