“The measures taken for travelers from China are more for psychological-political reasons, than for objective-scientific ones,” Professor of Epidemiology and member of the Ministry of Health’s expert committee, Gikas Majorkinis, told SKAI and Dona Droutsa.

“These are somewhat excessive measures,” he stressed, “with the ultimate goal of clarifying the situation in China, given that the data there is not as transparent as we would like.”

Mr. Majorkinis stated that “with the data we have so far, the executives who exist in China are not executives who can cause a problem in Europe and the mobilization of travelers cannot influence the situation.”

He added that a possible, but not significant, risk is the new strain that has emerged in the US, given that it presents a 20% advantage compared to the strains prevailing so far.

Referring to the flu, Mr. Majorkinis described what we are experiencing as one of the most intense flu seasons we have seen in many years.
He stressed, however, that it is a manageable situation.

Asked about the possibility of taking some measures, he emphasized that “measures are not visible anywhere”.

“We are very far from such a possibility,” he said, adding that we would only have something like this if we had pressure on the National Health System.

Mr. Majorkinis described vaccines as a very important “tool”, while referring specifically to the flu vaccine, he said that it is important for vulnerable people and health professionals to do it.

“When someone has symptoms, whether it’s the flu or the coronavirus, they should get tested and seek treatment early, not wait,” he added.
