Just walk a little along Brazilian beaches to see that the trend this summer is elongated eyelashes and long, impeccable nails. But this beauty combo requires care, as they don’t always combine with sand and salt water.
Dermatologist Daniella Fukumaru, from the La Forme clinic, says that these resources greatly favor women aesthetically. “The eyelashes are longer and more voluminous and the enamelling lasts much longer, but we must warn that they can, yes, bring risks to our health”, explains the head doctor of the Brazilian Society of Dermatology.
Gel nails, advises the doctor, can make natural nails more fragile and brittle. “Elongation of eyelashes can cause inflammation, irritation and allergy in the region of the base of the eyelashes and cause the fall or breakage of natural eyelashes by making a certain traction in the region or because of the use of products to stick and remove”, he says.
“For those who insist on using it, care must be taken to clean the area, especially when entering the sea and having contact with sand. Cleaning with light products suitable for the eyelid area is a good option”, he advises.
Those who have eyelash extensions need special care also because of temperature changes.
“This applies, for example, to those who work in industrial kitchens, due to the use of the oven. The eyelash thread is made of a material that can affect its curvature and adhesion at high temperatures”, explains Polly Leão, ambassador of LashBox LA and owner by Polly Leão Lashes.
According to Polly, sea water, swimming pool and sand do not damage eyelash extensions, but you need to be extra careful.
“If you don’t take care, maintenance will have to be done first. Generally, maintenance in cities with mild temperatures occurs once a month, but in coastal cities this period can be reduced to every 15 days. greater frequency on the beach, as well as in people who practice intense and daily sports”, says the specialist.
She adds that it is mandatory to have thermal or filtered water in your beach or pool bag to throw in your eyes whenever necessary (see more tips below).
Nails and water don’t mix
With regard to gel nails, the main care should be to maintain them within the correct timeframes, that is, every 15 days. The founder and CEO of Semhora Unha Franquias, Paula Faria, explains that, for greater durability of extensions and preservation of the health of natural nails, contact with sea water, pool chlorine, saliva and cleaning products should be avoided.
“Products for stretching are made to be used on a dry surface. Wet environments can damage the stretching, since, together with the natural growth of the nails, they accelerate the process of detachment of the edges of the adhered material, which allows water to infiltrate and proliferation of micro-organisms, which can even damage natural nails”, she says.
Faria says that in the summer or when the body sweats more, as in the practice of physical activity, the detachment of the edges can happen more quickly. “But, if maintenance is carried out every 15 days, with the correct technique, there is no interference in the quality of the work.”
The dermatologist doctor also explains that it is necessary to use common sense when using these beauty resources. “You can apply the nail or eyelashes, but it is important to take breaks and not use them constantly. If you have, do 2 to 3 weeks of break and, in that interval, use suitable products to strengthen the nail and use specific products for cleaning the eyelashes .”
The dermatologist advises that, to be in fashion this summer, there is just one item: sunscreen.
