Coronavirus – Mutations: Where are the cases of Omicron located in Greece

by

The Delta mutation continues to prevail in Greece as there remain 26 so far, the cases of the Omicron mutation that have been identified in our country.

The cases amount to 6667 in total

Completed by the National Network of Genomic Surveillance of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, operating under the coordination of EODY, genomic analysis in 1,304 samples selected randomly or targeted and covering the period November 15, 2021 to December 13, 2021. 1,304 samples, a total of 1,276 samples with variants of special interest (Variants Of Concern – VOC) emerged.

Of the 1,276 specimens of special interest, 1,267 relate to the Delta strain, and 9 relate to the Omicron. Twelve (12) of the 1,267 Delta executives concern the AY.4.2 strain, which were detected in eleven domestic cases in the Regional Units of Argolida (5), Lassithi (4), Thessaloniki (1), Piraeus (1) and in one (1) imported case. The
nine (9) Omicron executives were detected in five domestic cases in the Peripheral Units of North Athens (1), Central Athens (1), Laconia (2) and South Athens (1), and in four (4) imported cases.

Since the launch of the National Network of Genomic Surveillance of the SARS-CoV-2 virus until today, a total of 40,448 samples of domestic cases have been tested in the country. Of these, 36,155 come from random sampling, 3,552 come from targeted sampling or sample selection, and for 741 samples the selection method is not available. Among the 36,155 randomly selected samples in the territory, the four most common strains of special interest or surveillance that have been isolated are Delta, with 43.56%, followed by Alpha, with 43.05%, B.1.1. 318 (Variant E484K) with a percentage of 6.48%, and Beta with a percentage of 0.92% (Table 4). The evolution of the relative frequency of
Randomly sampled samples by species of strain up to week 48 are shown in Figure 9, with additional provisional data for weeks 49-50 given.

Of the 3,552 samples taken or selected in a targeted manner, 3,389 were found to be of special interest or under observation or interest. Of the samples taken or selected in a targeted manner, 36.99% relate to Delta, 36.88% to B.1.1.318 (Variant E484K), 15.17% to Alpha, 5.69% to Beta, 0.28 % in Omicron, 0.11% in C.36, 0.08% in Eta, 0.08% in Gamma, 0.08% in A.28 and 0.03% in Mu.

In addition, a total of 455 strains of special interest or under surveillance or interest have been isolated from samples
of which 310 are in Delta, 113 in Alpha, 11 in Omicron, 7 in Mu, 6 in Beta, 4 in B.1.1.318
(Variant E484K), 1 in Eta, 1 in C.36, 1 in Kappa and 1 in B.1.1 (Variant E484K).
For stakeholders currently in need of immediate control measures in the country, the geographical distribution by
Peripheral Unit is presented in Table 5.
