The healthy lifestyle, “key” to protect against the risk of Long Covid

Normal body weight, regular physical exercise, good sleep, proper diet, moderate alcohol consumption, non-smoking etc. were considered as factors of a healthy life.

People who lead a healthy lifestyle are less likely to develop prolonged Covid-19 with symptoms that last for months, a new US scientific study shows.

Simple things like a normal body weight and getting enough sleep of at least seven hours are clearly associated with a lower risk of long-term Covid.

The researchers, led by Dr. Andrea Roberts of the Harvard University School of Public Health, who made the relevant publication in the American medical journal “JAMA Internal Medicine”, analyzed data on more than 32,000 women. Of these, 1,900 fell ill due to coronavirus and 44% experienced prolonged Covid-19.

It found that, compared to women who lived unhealthy lives, those who led healthy lives had an average of up to 49% lower risk of long-term Covid-19.

Normal body weight, regular physical exercise, good sleep, proper diet, moderate alcohol consumption, non-smoking etc. were considered as factors of a healthy life.

The more healthy lifestyle factors a woman combined, the lower the chance of prolonged Covid-19. Even among those who experienced prolonged Covid, those who lived healthier before the infection had a 30% lower risk afterwards of severe persistent symptoms that disrupted their daily lives.

Normal weight and adequate quality sleep appeared to be the two factors with the strongest association for a lower risk of prolonged Covid.

“With repeated waves of Covid-19, prolonged Covid has created a serious public health problem. Our findings highlight the potential to reduce the risk of developing prolonged Covid if healthier behaviors are adopted,” said Dr Roberts.

Millions of people around the world are suffering from prolonged Covid-19. The disease is considered as such if one or more of its symptoms (fatigue, fever, cough, cardiac, neurological, gastrointestinal, etc.) persist for more than four weeks after the initial coronavirus infection.

The researchers said one possible explanation for the long-term Covid-19 prevention-healthy lifestyle link is that an unhealthy lifestyle is associated with an increased risk for chronic inflammation and a weakened immune system, two conditions that have been linked to an increased risk of long-term infection.
