The Omicron mutation wave is already weakening without a large increase in deaths according to the South African authorities where the new coronavirus variant was first identified. Omicron is currently present in about a hundred countries, according to the World Health Organization.
Yesterday, Thursday night, the presidency had announced that all indicators show that the country has probably passed the peak of the fourth wave of the pandemic and that “there has been a marginal increase in the number of deaths.”
“According to our experts, Omicron reached its peak without [αυτό] “translate into a significant or worrying change in the number of hospitalizations,” said Minister Modil Gungumbele today, assuring the government that it remains vigilant against any adverse developments.
At the same time, new infections fell by almost 30% last week (89,781) compared to the previous one (127,753). And hospital admissions fell in eight of the nine provinces:
“The speed with which the fourth wave due to Omicron increased, then reached a peak and then weakened, was amazing. A peak in four weeks and a weakening in just two weeks, “Farid Abdullah of the South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC) wrote on Twitter.
“When we compared 466 admissions during the Omicron outbreak with 3976 admissions to previous waves of deaths, ICU admissions and length of hospital stay were all significantly lower. “Deaths on the Omicron wave were reduced by 80%, ICU admissions were reduced by 75% and hospital stays were 50% compared to the results and admissions to previous waves (combined),” he added.
While many countries affected by Omicron are announcing a strengthening of health restrictions and a record number of new infections every day, the South African government has lifted the night-time ban so nightclubs can return to normal. However, the use of a mask remains mandatory in public places and gatherings of up to 1,000 people are allowed indoors and 2,000 in the open.
The speed with which the Omicron driven fourth wave rose, peaked and then declined has been staggering. Peak in four weeks and precipitous decline in another two. This Omicron wave is over in the City of Tshwane. It was a flash flood more than a wave.

Hospital admissions rose and declined rapidly, following the trajectory of the cases. Admissions peaked within 3 weeks and started declining to significantly lower levels in the two weeks following the peak.
