While the World Health Organization (WHO) has ended the global emergency status for COVID-19, the virus remains harmful and China will continue to monitor it while increasing vaccinations among high-risk groups, a top Chinese health official said today services.
The WHO yesterday lifted the highest level of alert for COVID, more than three years after it was declared, saying countries should now manage the virus alongside other infectious diseases.
Ending the state of alert does not mean that COVID will disappear, but its impact can now be effectively brought under control, Liang Wanyan, head of China’s expert team on COVID-19 under the National Health Commission, said in an interview on the state CCTV network and published today.
China will continue to monitor the variant strains of the virus, increase vaccinations for vulnerable groups and try to improve the treatment capabilities of COVID, Liang said.
